Questions about Supporting WVPT Public Television
Q: How can I make a contribution online to WVPT, Your Source for PBS & More?
Just click here and you will be taken to our secure online contribution form. Or click on the Donate button on our home page. You can also call our 24/7 customer service call center at 888-987-8727.
Q: Why should I become a donor/member of WVPT?
A: WVPT exists to serve YOU, our viewers, by providing a diverse array of quality programs, educational and public services for adults and children of all ages and walks of life. Your donation to WVPT is a donation for the entire community. Unlike commercial and cable television stations that are profit-driven, WVPT is a mission-driven organization. WVPT does not exist to serve advertisers, businesses or the commercial marketplace.
Q: How is my contribution used?
A: Your contribution is invested in the acquisition, production and broadcast of the wonderful programs that you see everyday on WVPT. Your gift also supports the station's many educational services and outreach service projects. In addition, your gift helps offset the cost of station operations and technical requirements.
Q: What benefits will I receive as a donor/member?
A: Most importantly, when you join WVPT, you will enjoy the satisfaction of supporting your community's most accessible center for entertainment, education, art, information and culture. You will also help many families in our community that may not be able to donate, but whose children benefit from programming that helps them become ready to enter school.
Q: Don't I already support WVPT with my tax dollars?
A: American taxpayers contribute an average of $1.09 annually (less than the cost of a Sunday newspaper) toward funding public television nationally. With the state reductions in Virginia, funding for public broadcasting in the state equals approximately 38 cents per resident this year. WVPT matches essentially every dollar from the government with local financial support. With government support continuing to decrease, community support is more important than ever before. WVPT is a non-commercial, non-profit public television station. Though the station receives support from federal and state sources, as well as from generous area business underwriting, the largest source of revenue must come from voluntary contributions of individuals. WVPT relies on the generous support of the community for approximately 50% of its operating budget.
Q: Is my gift to WVPT tax-deductible?
A: WVPT is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. Your contribution to the station is fully tax-deductible, minus the fair market value of any thank you gifts you receive. For example, if your contribution to WVPT is $150 and you choose to receive a CD/DVD that has a retail value of $15.95 as your thank you gift, the deductibility of your gift will be $134.05.
Q: How long will it take for me to receive my thank you gift?
A: Once your contribution has been received by WVPT, the receipt of your thank you gift may take up to eight weeks.
Q: Does WVPT receive any of my monthly cable/satellite fees?
A: No, WVPT depends on the generosity of its members and receives no money from cable or satellite fees.
Q: I don't watch much TV. Why should I become a donor/member?
A: Research tells us that public television members actually watch less television than non-members because they are more selective about what they watch. In fact, most of WVPT members choose to support the station because WVPT offers a consistent source of quality, intelligent programming for the discerning viewer. Our educational children's programs provide sons, daughters and grandchildren with commercial free programs each and every day. Also, your support will assist in the many outreach community events and training seminars WVPT provides in the community.
Q: I've never used my credit card on the Internet before. Is it safe?
A WVPT is using a secure browser and the best encryption technology available to ensure your protection and privacy.
Q: How is WVPT involved in my community?
A: WVPT offers a rare broadcast oasis where children learn to use their imaginations rather than their fists, are encouraged to use their minds rather than their might, and are enticed to pick up a book rather than the remote control. WVPT helps our community's citizens make informed decisions when choosing elected officials by providing in depth broadcast coverage of candidate debates and profiles, as well as election night returns. Through locally produced series such as The Miller Center Forums, Virginia Farming, and WVPT Cooks with Tassie Pippert, WVPT's local programming entices viewers to explore, celebrate and appreciate the joys, the rich history and the cultural diversity our community offers.
Q: How can I contact WVPT?
