Each year for the past 27 years, world-renowned artist P. Buckley Moss has created an original watercolor especially for WVPT—Virginia's Public Television. Each year, prints of the original are made and sold exclusively through WVPT to support the broadcast of culturally enriching programs and series on WVPT. Known as "The People's Artist," P. Buckley Moss is a patron of the arts and is a champion for children with learning disabilities.
"Woodrow Wilson Birthplace" is the first of four prints in the Presidential Homes of Virginia series that artist P. Buckley Moss created exclusively for WVPT—Virginia’s Public Television. This print, from 1993, is a stately portrait of the Shenandoah Valley landmark located in Staunton, Virginia. Built in the 1840s as a manse for the Staunton Presbyterian Church, the twelve-room Greek Revival-style brick house had a classic center hall and four chimneys. In March 1855, the church's new pastor and his family moved into the manse. The Reverend Joseph Ruggles Wilson, his wife and daughters welcomed their third child, Thomas Woodrow Wilson, on December 28, 1856. Throughout his life, Woodrow Wilson returned to visit the home of his birth and, in 1912, he celebrated his 56th birthday at the house as President-elect. Following President Wilson's death in 1924, it was decided that the house would become a museum, and the Woodrow Wilson Presidential Library and museum remains there today as an important part of Virginia and United States History to be enjoyed by all who visit.
