"Buckhorn Inn" is the fourth and final print in the Historic Sites of the Shenandoah Valley and Albemarle regions of Virginia series that artist P. Buckley Moss created exclusively for WVPT—Virginia’s Public Television. This print, from 1992, is a scenic portrait of the Shenandoah Valley landmark located in Staunton, Virginia. Built in 1811 as Buckhorn Tavern, it was renowned for music, dances, whisky, and "high class gambling.” In 1854, Stonewall Jackson and his wife spent the night in what is now the Stonewall Jackson suite. During the Civil War, many soldiers from the Battle of McDowell were cared for when the Tavern was converted into a hospital. Some say you can still see the bloodstains on the old heart pine floors. The Buckhorn served as a roadhouse and stage stop for weary travelers in the 1880s. The Buckhorn Inn is now known for intimate dining and comfortable lodging in a beautiful country setting. The spirit of warmth and hospitality is evident in this wonderful print.
