DVD OR BLU-RAY, IL VOLO TAKES FLIGHT Italian heartthrobs Il Volo, the three “Teenage Tenors” -- Piero Barone (18,) Ignazio Boschetto (17) and Gianluca Ginoble (16) -- have been receiving unanimous raves for their vocal talent and showmanship. "If you've never heard them sing 'O Solo Mio' or other classics in their rep, then be prepared to be blown away," raved the NY Daily News. "Il Volo wring every ounce of emotion from the classical-crossover material on their self-titled debut, then find just a bit more to extract," commented The Village Voice.
Il Volo, meaning "the flight" was chosen to signify the feeling that these three young tenors were about to spread their wings. Now they have taken flight in their premiere television special for PBS filmed from Detroit’s famed Opera House on October 27, 2011, captured here along with bonus material on this special DVD or Blu-ray.
The Teenage Tenors took the audience by storm during the live concert taping, singing operatic, pop and Italian classics that showcased their vocal talent as well as their interpretive gift for music. Backed by a 49-piece orchestra and 5-piece rhythm section, Il Volo’s versions of “’O Sole Mio,” “Il Mondo,” and “E Piu Ti Penso,” a medley of Ennio Morricone songs from the song tracks to Once Upon a Time in America and Malèna and the Charlie Chaplin song, “Smile” made popular by Nat King Cole, brought the audience to their feet as they exploded with applause for these gifted performers.
A touching moment came when the boys sang the popular Italian song, “Mamma” and Ignazio and Gianluca went into the audience to serenade their tearful moms. The trio continued their magic with the popular Neopolitan song, “Funiculi’ Funicula’” and audience members participated again on their feet, clapping and singing along. A favorite from American Idol Season 10, Pia Toscano, joined the boys to sing and dance to a brand new Diane Warren original, “La Luna Hizo Esto,” and world-class guitarist Milos Karadaglic accompanied the group to introduce the song “Granada.”
Il Volo may be young but their mission is clear: "We want to share our love for this music with people all over the world, including kids our own age." Just look at the audience faces, young and old, during the taping of this performance and you will see they have achieved just that.
Il Volo has appeared on several TV shows since their May 2011 debut in the US including American Idol, The Today Show, Good Morning America, Ellen, Leno, The Talk as well as the final episode of HBO's Entourage. Their single “’O Solo Mio” has been seen by over one million fans on YouTube. Their astonishing vocal talent was first discovered on the Italian hit TV show, Ti Lascio Una Canzone (Leaving You A Song). Already certified platinum in their homeland of Italy and several other countries, Il Volo have captured the hearts of Americans of all ages.
