The WVPT Masterpiece Book & Film Club was started in January, 2008, to read all of Jane Austen's six books and watch the adaptations on WVPT/PBS "Masterpiece Classics". So, we came together because we were big Jane Austen fans and managed to find two fabulous UVA English professors, Andrea Press and Alison Booth, to attend our meetings and provide expert background information about the author and each book. The group enjoyed the meetings so much that we decided to continue meeting, reading, and screening book adaptations. We read mostly English classics such as Jane Eyre, Brideshead Revisited, Crandford, Tess of the D'Urbervilles, Wuthering Heights and watch the PBS productions.

When WVPT added the Candleford series to their program schedule this fall, the club decided to read the trilogy by Flora Thompson. We love the books and can't wait to watch the shows each week.

We meet first Wednesday of the month at the Barnes & Noble bookstore in Charlottesville.

I have become a dedicated member of WVPT Masterpiece Book & Film Club in Charlottesville, because of the challenging, insightful but fun focus this group has on classic literature. It reviews literature in its historical and social context and adds the element of film. Books read are either currently aired on WVPT so we can read along or are available in film. Thank you WVPT for bringing our diverse group together. I look forward to each monthly meeting and appreciate the friends I have made in our group.
Signed,
Caroline Kenney
